A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE ALYTH SHOW
What we now all know affectionately as the Alyth Show began life in 1946 and was instigated by local businessmen and farmers assisted by the Red Cross in an effort to raise funds for servicemen returning from the Second World War. Initially devised along the lines of a gala day it had gradually evolved into the Alyth Horse Show by the late nineteen forties. A further transition occurred during the mid fifties as the Committee subsequently renamed the Show as The Alyth and District Farmers Society and at the same time had it registered as a Mutual Society.
The Diamond Jubilee Park in Alyth remained the venue for the Show until the late nineteen eighties by which time it had become obvious to the Committee that there was unfortunately, insufficient space in the Park to contain the ever expanding show. The decision therefore, to change the venue from the Diamond Jubilee Park to a local field, was reluctantly taken by the Committee in 1990. Since then the show has rotated through a variety of different venues thanks to the courtesy of several local farmers. Many thanks in this regard are due to JC & GC Fleming, Peter Marshall & Company, Hallyburton Estates and the current providers of the venue the Crossley family at South Balloch.
The show is one of the most popular small agricultural shows on the circuit and always has a very high quality entry of stock; indeed many of the champions at Alyth have progressed to perform very well at The Royal Highland Show. In the fifties and sixties Alyth Show was generally regarded as having one of the largest entries of blackface sheep.
In recent times the Show has seen a huge increase in the number of horses showing and competing, with many of these competitors travelling large distances to attend our popular show. The Committee are also aware that in this modern age they must cater for all members of the community and a lot of attention is paid to make the show appealing and attractive to all. In this regard the Show is extremely fortunate to be one of the fifteen annual fixtures of the Perthshire Highland Games Association.
So, if you fancy a great day out with entertainment for everyone then Alyth Show should definitely be pencilled into your diary.
All visitors will be warmly welcomed.
